At the recent Anzac Day Australia memorial services held at the Shrine Of Remembrance in Melbourne City, the pathway was deemed potentially unstable for those attending the services. Premier Turf and Landscape Solutions were asked if they knew an effective way to stabilize the surface in time for the services to be held? Mr David Harrison from Premier Turf ‘surfed’ the web to look for soil stabilization solutions and found a product called Rapelle Dust Binder. After checking other applications of the product, Mr Harrison then ascertained if the product would meet his brief. His brief was that the solution had to be strong enough to withstand some occasional vehicular traffic and of course stand up to at times to heavy human traffic. In addition, it was to have no environmental impact.

Mr Harrison spoke with the management of Rapelle Pty Ltd a surface treatment specialist and after consultation proceeded with the application of their Dust Binder product. Mr Harrison said “I was concerned about a number of aspects prior to application ranging from durability and life of product, its ability to not degrade in heavy rain and most importantly its curing time as we did not have a great deal of time to complete”. He said “I was happy to hear that the product could be simply applied in a watering can prior to and after surface compacting with a roller.” “It was very easy to apply and the pathway was ready to be walked on within 2 hours of application.” Mr Harrison was also advised that the stabilized surface should have an estimated durability of 10 years, subject to level of traffic. On the day of the Anzac Remembrance Memorial Services there were an estimated 40,000 visitors expected to attend.

The stabilization of the pathway required the removal of ruts, growth and loose debris and then replacing 50m of the surface with new granitic gravel bound together with Rapelle Dust Binder to provide a smooth, safe surface in time for the annual Anzac Day Remembrance Service at the Shrine.
