Rapelle Rust to the Rescue

Rapelle Rust to the rescue to keep the Navy’s tug Seahorse Quanda operational.

The Grey and Black water tanks on the Seahorse Quanda were severely corroded and needed rectification.

Traditional rust conversion and overcoating methods are not a sufficient remediation option according to the International Paint Hydro-blasting Standards and the Australian Standard 2312.

The existing rust needed to be fully and permanently passivated prior to any overcoating to ensure the required minimum 10 year solution.

Problem solved and project complete with a 10 year guarantee!

The solution:

After making a detailed inspection of the tanks, the following treatment was recommended;

  • Removal of effluent from the tanks and rinse out thoroughly.
  • Apply a de-scaling agent to the tanks for 12 hours then rinse out thoroughly.
  • Apply 3 coats of Rapelle Rust to the corroded surface. ( wet on wet coats )
  • Paint the internals of the tanks with the recommended specialised 2 pack epoxy paint to Navy specifications.

It was confirmed that the residual corrosion on the surface was not flaky but rather surface rust.
